District 5 Week 2 recap: Rockland routs Dietrich; Sho-Ban, Century drop conference games; West Side, Bear Lake stay perfect

EASTERN IDAHO — The Rockland Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the season, with a pair of lopsided victories over non-conference foes, Saturday at Idaho State University’s ICCU Dome.

The Bulldogs (2-0, 0-0) used outstanding performances from their three seniors and equally impressive games from a pair of freshmen to beat the Dietrich Blue Devils (1-1) 71-6. And that dominance came on the heels of a 66-8 Week 1 road win over Lighthouse Christian (0-2), meaning Rockland has outscored its opponents by 123 combined points through two games.
American Falls (2-1, 0-0) suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday, falling 20-3 at Emmett (3-0). The Beavers’ 4A South East Idaho Conference foes, the Snake River Panthers (0-3, 0-0), also lost a Thursday road game, suffering a 38-17 defeat at the hands of the Kimberly Bulldogs (1-2).
Two District 5 teams played conference games.
The Sho-Ban Chiefs (0-1, 0-1) hosted the Watersprings Warriors (1-1, 1-0) and lost 50-26.
The Century Diamondbacks (0-2, 0-2) hosted the Skyline Grizzlies (2-0, 2-0) and also lost, 35-24.
Before the start of the season, Century head coach Ryan Fleischmann said that his team, coming off a very successful season that saw them win a playoff game, would need to be ready to face top-tier talent every week. The two-team 5A fifth district has joined the High Country Conference this season, meaning Century and Pocatello will face state title contenders on a nearly weekly basis.
Skyline is one of those teams, and the Diamondbacks, after taking a 7-0 lead into the second quarter, were unable to stop the Grizzlies from pulling away.
The Pocatello Thunder (1-1, 0-1) had a much more productive weekend, traveling to Nampa and beating the Bulldogs (1-1) 16-14.
North Gem and Malad both bounced back from Week 1 losses.
The Cowboys (2-1, 0-0) beat Camas County (0-1) on the road, 64-48, while the Dragons (1-2, 0-0) beat Ririe (1-2), 21-18, also on the road.
Aberdeen lost another heartbreaker, this time to Declo (3-0). The Tigers (1-2, 0-0) fell 7-6 at rival American Falls in Week 1, then followed that up with a 29-22 overtime loss at home Friday against the Hornets.
Marsh Valley and Soda Springs continue their search for victory.
The Eagles (0-3, 0-0) traveled to North Fremont, where they were beaten 19-14 by the Huskies (1-2, 0-0).
They will welcome conference foe Aberdeen to town in this week’s East Idaho Sports District 5 Game of the Week.
The Cardinals (0-2, 0-0) hosted Lyman (WY) and went down 29-14.
The Grace Grizzlies (1-2, 0-0), who started the season with a Week 0 victory over Murtaugh (0-2), have now lost back-to-back games since, after falling 42-12 at Raft River on Friday.
Bear Lake and West Side remained among the ranks of the undefeated.
The Bears (3-0, 0-0) snuck past Firth (0-2, 0-0) 22-21 at Bear Lake High School. They will be tested when they visit the South Fremont Cougars and quarterback Cy Hill on Friday.
South Fremont is coming off a loss, going down 28-13 at West Side High School. The Pirates (3-0, 0-0) were led once again by do-everything senior Drake Sage, who rushed for 208 yards and two touchdowns, while also intercepting a pass from his linebacker position. Sage and the Pirates will host Ririe Friday.
