Highland, in search of first playoff win in 3 years, draws rematch with Lake City

POCATELLO — The last time Highland won a state tournament game was in 2023, when they beat Coeur d’Alene for a state championship.
Now, the Rams (4-5) will look to turn things around against a Lake City team against whom they have already turned things around once this season. After losing their first three games of the season, Highland met the Timberwolves (6-3) at Montana Technological University in Butte, Mont., on Sept. 18, and beat them 36-0.
Since that game, Lake City has won three of four to finish second in the Inland Empire League.
The Rams went on to beat Century, Pocatello and Thunder Ridge, while losing conference showdowns with fellow state tourney participants Madison and Rigby.
Highland is led offensively by senior running back Cedric Mitchell, who average 87.9 rushing yards and 33.3 receiving yards per game, while scoring a team-leading 14 touchdowns.
When they faced Lake City in September, the Rams got a 98-yard kick-return touchdown from senior Easton Almond to start the game. Mitchell finished that game with 161 yards and one score on the ground. Senior Kellan Tingey added two touchdowns — one rushing and one receiving — while senior Steele Hoopes hauled a touchdown catch of his own.
The East Idaho Sports District Game of the Week is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Highland High School.
