POCATELLO — Despite having already played several home games at their new digs, the Pocatello Thunder will officially open Rails West Field with a ribbon-cutting ceremony before Thursday’s showdown with crosstown rival Highland.
The Thunder have played their last six games at the new home field, going 4-2, including wins over Rigby and Burley. Thursday’s game, however, will mark the official opening of the stadium, with a celebration sponsored by Rails West Credit Union. Fans in attendance will get free hot dogs, with early arrivers receiving commemorative shirts.

Ground was broken at the stadium site on the 1100 block of West Eldredge last spring. Prior to the groundbreaking, Pocatello head baseball coach Vinnie Benavidez spoke to EastIdahoSports.com about the pride that comes with having a team’s own field.
“It’s going to be a game-changer for us, something that we’re really looking forward to,” Benavidez said. “It’s just a huge addition for our program. It’s just a big upgrade. … It’s also going to be nice for us to have something we can call our own.”

For several years, the Thunder have played home game at Halliwell Park, which it shared with American Legion teams as well as the Gate City Grays.
Now, Benavidez said, his team will play on its own field.
Thursday’s celebration is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., with first pitch between the Thunder and Rams scheduled for 5 p.m.
