Week 1 recap and notes: Looking at season openers, conference races, and tough matchups

EASTERN IDAHO — Sugar-Salem bounced back from a rare loss and wasted no time Friday against Snake River on the way to a 35-0 road win.

The Diggers put up 27 points in the first quarter as Frank Fillmore ran for a 43-yard TD and passed for another score in the quarter.

Four Digger players scored rushing touchdowns with Declan Richins leading the way with 110 yards. Frank Fillmore finished with 69 yards on the ground, with Adriane Williams adding 65 yards, and Latrell Markle and Kai Benfield each scoring.

Cougars unbeaten

South Fremont is off to a 2-0 start with Friday’s 38-18 win over West Jefferson.

The Cougars have put up 91 points in their wins over North Fremont and West Jefferson, but get a bigger test this week when they face 3A power West Side.

The Pirates (2-0) have surrendered just seven points in their two games.

Checking in on 5A District 5-6

Conference coaches’ preseason No. 1 Blackfoot is 2-0 after a 41-13 win over conference newcomer Century.

Blackfoot and Shelley are the only teams to have played two conference games to open the season, with Shelley also getting in the win column with a 24-14 victory over Idaho Falls.

Defending conference champion Hillcrest had little trouble in its season opener at conference newcomer Pocatello, coming away with a 32-7 win.

Polls

Entering the weekend, the state coaches’ poll had Rigby ranked No. 1 in 6A and West Side No. 1 in 3A.

So how’d they do?

West Side improved to 2-0 with a 35-7 win over Firth.

Rigby is 2-0 and continues its battle against Utah teams when the Trojans host Syracuse (UT) on Friday.

Rigby’s offense looks just fine, totaling 62 points in its two wins.

Speaking of polls, there should be a shakeup in 6A this week with Madison opening the season 2-0 and Highland dropping to 0-2.

The Bobcat defense has two shutouts in its two games, but the Rams have arguably played a tougher schedule so far.

Entering the week, Highland was No. 5 after a close loss to No. 3 Eagle and Madison was unranked in the top 5 but receiving votes.
