EASTERN IDAHO – The Rigby boys cross country team had a good day at last week’s Nike-Hole in the Wall Invitational.

Senior Jonas Porter finished fourth in the Elite race and with a season-best time of 14:49.0, which is the second fastest time in the state, and just the second time Porter had run under 15 minutes. He clocked 14:44.4 to finish fourth at last year’s state championships.

Sophomore James Chandler was 12th in a PR of 15:21.8 as the Trojans finished second in the team standings.

More running

Eliza Peck of Idaho Falls set a season-best of 18:44.6 at the Nike-Hole in the Wall Varsity Gold race, besting her previous time by more than a minute.

Peck’s time is currently third in the state in 5A.

Century freshman Ivana Vasquez is fifth on the state 5A list after running a PR of 19:10.4 at the Blake Stephens Invitational.

Darrel Dickson’s time of 15:04.5, set last month at the Bob Firman Invitational, still leads all 4A boys. The Sugar-Salem junior’s time is 34 seconds ahead of the No. 2 runner on the performance list.

The district championships are Oct. 22 at the Portneuf Wellness Complex.

Volleyball districts

Despite an impressive record heading into the postseason, Madison volleyball coach Keanu Pukahi always likes to gauge his team by how the Bobcats play in Utah.

After winning 20 consecutive matches, Madison headed to the Best in the West tournament in Millville (UT) and lost four of five matches.

The team returned home to beat rival Rigby and then close the regular season with a win at Highland to finish 6-0 in the High Country Conference and improve to 23-5 overall.

More volleyball

The current 6A MaxPreps rankings have Rigby (31-3) at No. 1, followed by state champion Skyview (21-7), and then Madison (23-5) at No. 3.

The district tournament begins Saturday and could produce three Madison vs. Rigby matchups if it goes to an if-necessary game.

Soccer power

5A District 5-6 has a chance to get four teams into the girls state tournament.

Hillcrest and Skyline have already advanced, and Idaho Falls and Pocatello compete in state play-in games on Saturday.

The only thing for certain is to expect some offense.

Among teams that have submitted stats, Skyline’s Macy Marlow and Isley Dixon lead the state with 101 and 97 points, respectively.

Dixon leads with 37 goals and Marlow has 35 goals and leads the state with 31 assists.

Not to be outdone, Hillcrest’s duo of Quincy Daw and Brinley Nelson each have 86 points, good enough for third in the state.

Daw has 33 goals and Nelson has 31.
