In the ad for the 2012 Honda CR-V, Broderick behaves much like his character in the 1986 comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.  The ad is similar to the film in many ways — most notably, Broderick pretends to be ill so he can play hooky from work.

At one point, a character says Broderick’s name repeatedly in a monotone voice, not unlike how Ben Stein’s character, a high school teacher, called out for Bueller in the movie.  The spot also includes the signature Ferris Bueller’s Day Off song “Oh Yeah.”

An executive for the ad firm that developed the spot tells Entertainment Weekly that Broderick initially turned down the idea, but, the exec says, “[A] week later he called and asked if it was still on the table.  I think he just wanted to be convinced that we would do the movie justice.”

The Hangover director Todd Phillips helmed the commercial.

The Super Bowl airs on NBC this Sunday.
