(NEW YORK) — Santonio Holmes is staying put in the Big Apple. The New York Jets wide receiver remained on the roster Wednesday, which means Gang Green is on the hook for his 2013 salary of $7.5 million. He was already guaranteed his 2012 salary of nearly $8 million dollars.
“They signed him to a huge deal before the season started,” ESPNNewYork.com’s Rich Cimini told ESPNews. “It was five years, $45 million. They have to eat a lot of money to cut him. They would have to eat $8 million out of their own pocket plus not to have him on the team this year would have been a $12 million cap hit, which would have really restricted their ability to improve other areas on the team.”
The 27-year-old Holmes finished the 2011 campaign with 51 receptions for 654 yards and eight touchdowns. He was benched at one point during the Jets’ regular-season finale against the Miami Dolphins, with some teammates reportedly upset with his effort.
