Authorities were called to Chardon High School — about 35 miles east of Cleveland — just before 8 a.m.  According to officials, the incident took place in the cafeteria.  The shooter, who has only been identified as a juvenile, used a handgun and was chased out of the building by a teacher.

Three of the victims were taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital, while the other two were transported via ambulance.

At a news conference later Monday, Chardon Police Chief Tim McKenna announced one of the students had died.

He said, “There is one deceased student.  That’s the sad news for all of us today.”

The severity of the other victims’ injuries is unknown.

The gunman has since been apprehended and has not yet been charged.  Police say he turned himself into a passerby.
