NFL Passes Rule Changes

Last season, the NFL owners voted that all scoring plays would be reviewed, and now that is being expanded. All turnovers will be reviewed from the booth, eliminating coaches’ challenges when there is a turnover.

Also, the league’s overtime playoff format will now be brought to the regular season. If the first team with possession in overtime scores a field goal, the opposing team will get a chance to tie or take the lead. If the first team scores a touchdown, then the game is over. The vote of adopting the playoff overtime rule over to the regular season was 30-2.

The NFL wasn’t done there, as a team will lose a down for illegally kicking a loose ball; too many men on the field will result in a dead-ball foul; and a player who receives a crackback block will now be considered a defenseless player, which will result in a 15-yard penalty.

There were rule proposals that didn’t get passed though. There were proposals to have the booth officals handle video reviews rather than the referee, and also outlawing the horse-collar tackle made on a quarterback in the pocket.
