(NEW YORK) — The New York Mets have placed left fielder Jason Bay and pitcher Mike Pelfrey on the disabled list.
Bay has a non-displaced fracture of a rib on his left side. He suffered the injury Monday, during the second game of a doubleheader with the San Francisco Giants while attempting to make a diving catch.
Pelfrey has right shoulder inflammation, but Mets’ general manager Sandy Alderson says there could be ligament damage. If that is the case, there is a chance Pelfrey will need Tommy John surgery.
Bay is hitting .240 with three home runs and five RBI. In three starts, Pelfrey has zero decisions and has compiled a 2.29 ERA along with 13 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched.
