(EL SEGUNDO, Calif.) — Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol was named the winner of this seasons J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award Friday, by the Professional Basketball Writers Association.
The award is given annually to the player, coach or trainer who shows outstanding service and dedication to the community.
Gasol participated in charity work for UNICEF, and has been an UNICEF ambassador for seven years. He also has had a long relationship with the St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.
Lakers forward Metta World Peace won the award last season, for his help with mental health charities.
Gasol beat out Orlando Magic guard J.J. Redick, Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith and Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry for the award.
