Big East Hires Aresco as New Commissioner
(NEW YORK) -- CBS Sports executive vice president Mike Aresco has been hired as the new commissioner of the Big East conference.
Aresco has been with CBS since 1996 and served in his current position since 2008. While there he has handled the networks negotiations to the rights to the NCAA men's basketball tournament, and worked out CBS's 15-year-deal with the Southeastern Conference.
"The search to identify the new Commissioner of The Big East Conference was truly an international search," said Greg Williams, University of Cincinnati president and chair of the commissioner search. "We had many outstanding candidates, but we are fortunate to have Mike Aresco as our new Commissioner. His breadth of experience and depth of knowledge in intercollegiate athletics will continue to move the Big East forward on a successful path. The Big East has enjoyed a great history. Mike Aresco will help assure the conference of a vibrant future."
Aresco main goal will be to negotiate a new television contract for the conference. On September 1, a 60-day exclusive negotiation period will start with the ESPN. If a deal isn't reached, the conferences' media rights go on the open market.
