Joseph injured the right knee in a preseason game agains the New England Patriots and had to be carted off the field. He will need surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon.

A Pro Bowl selection a year ago, Joseph could be replaced by either Ted Larsen or Derek Hardman in the starting lineup.

“Thanks for all of the support, positive vibes, and prayers,” Joseph wrote on Twitter. “Overall, it could be worse. God has a plan. I’ll be back ASAP.”

The Buccaneers will miss the presence of Joseph, who was paired with free agent Carl Nicks at the guard position in front of quarterback Josh Freeman.

“It’s part of what we do,” Schiano said. “You mourn and you move on.”
