L. Redkoles/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — One of the most popular players to wear a Red Sox uniform in recent years is coming back to the team. Former catcher Jason Varitek has been named a special assistant to general manager Ben Cherrington.

Varitek has no front office experience, but there are some who feel that this is the start of a long career with Red Sox management. Some members of the Boston media think that Varitek could eventually become the team’s manager or rise up the front office ranks.

“He will be involved in a number of areas,” Cherrington said in a statement. “Including major league personnel decisions, evaluations, and mentorship and instruction of young players. We are fortunate to have him in this role.”

The 40-year-old spent 15 total seasons with the Red Sox. He was a key member of their World Series teams in 2004 and 2007, and was always commended for his leadership and intangibles.

During his career with the Red Sox, Varitek hit .256 with 193 home runs and 757 RBIs.
