The contract was a second chance for a player who never got much of his first chance.

Greenberg was last in the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 2005, but in his lone plate appearance he was hit in the back of the head with a fastball, a moment that put a huge damper on his career.

In his at-bat against the New York Mets in the sixth inning, the 31-year-old struck out on three pitches pinch-hitting against New York Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.

“It was magical,” he said. “The energy in the stadium was something I never experienced, and I don’t know if I will ever experience it again. You could just feel the genuine support. It was awesome.”

Greenberg was last in the majors in 2008 with the Los Angeles Angels.  He played in independent baseball leagues from 2009-2011.
