Prices at the pump at some service stations were more than $5 a gallon just for regular.

A variety of factors are responsible for California’s spike in prices — a whopping 47 cents in one week — including an Exxon Mobil refinery in Torrance knocked offline last Monday by a power outage.

Other refinery and pipeline problems that are taking longer than usual to figure out are also hitting motorists in the pocket book.

In an effort to bring down prices, Gov. Jerry Brown issued a directive Sunday for the California Air Resources Board to immediately allow oil refineries to make an early transition to winter-blend gas, which isn’t normally sold until after October.

Nationally, the average stands at $3.81 a gallon.
