During his two-seasons at the helm in Toronto, the 50-year-old Farrell compiled a record of 154-170. He served as the Red Sox pitching coach from 2007-10.

“I’m extremely excited to be returning to the Red Sox and to Boston,” said Farrell in a statement released by the team. “I love this organization. It’s a great franchise in a special city and region, with great fans, and we want nothing more than to reward their faith in us.”

Farrell had a year remaining on his contract with the Blue Jays. The Red Sox will send infielder Mike Aviles to Toronto as compensation.

In his lone season with the Red Sox, Valentine finished 69-93.
