(SAN FRANCISCO) — San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval smashed three home runs, two off Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander, as he helped lead the Giants to an 8-3 victory in Game 1 of the World Series Wednesday night.
“Calm down myself and find a pitch I could hit,” Sandoval said of his approach against Verlander. “He’s got great stuff. I just tried to get a pitch I could drive.”
Verlander, who hadn’t allowed more than one run in his previous three postseason starts, had seven days of rest following his last start and allowed five earned runs in four innings of work.
Giants starter Barry Zito pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball to earn the win.
Game 2 is Thursday night in San Francisco. The Giants will send Madison Bumgarner to the mound. He will be opposed by Doug Fister. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern.
