Adam Lambert Criticizes “Les Mis” for ‘Pretend Singers’

Universal Pictures(LOS ANGELES) — The big-screen adaptation of Les Miserables is being lauded by crowds and critics alike, but singer Adam Lambert says the film “suffered massively” from “great actors PRETENDING to be singers.”
The American Idol runner up sent out a flurry of tweets over the weekend after seeing the film. Lambert called the film “visually impressive” with “great emotional performances,” but criticized the singing.
“The industry will say ‘these actors were so brave to attempt singing this score live’ but why not cast actors who could actually sound good?” Lambert wrote. “I felt like I should ignore the vocals and focus on the emotional subtext–but the singing was so distracting at times it pulled me out.”
While he lauded director Tom Hooper for having the actors perform live rather than lip synch to a recorded track, he said Hooper should have “sweetened the vocals” in the studio.
Lambert did praise the performances by Anne Hathaway as the prostitute Fantine and stage actor Aaron Tveit, who played revolutionary Enjolras. “Helena B Carter and Sasha B Cohen (sic) were great too,” Lambert wrote.
“I grew up w this musical and so my expectations are quite high,” Lambert said. “DO go see it for Anne Hathaways performance. It’s was breathtaking,” he said.
