Major League Baseball(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) — The Kansas City Royals agreed to a trade Sunday with the Tampa Bay Rays sends starting pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis to the Royals in exchange for hitting prospect Will Myers and other minor leaguers.

Shields was a 15-game winner for Tampa Bay this season, and was an All-Star selection two years ago. He has also been durable, pitching more than 200 innings in each of the last six seasons.

The trade signals a shift by the Royals that has them playing to win this season.

“We have to start winning games at the major league level, and the way you develop a winning culture is by winning major league games,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. “It’s time for us to start winning at the major league level.”

Myers, 22, will be heading to Tampa Bay after hitting .314 with 37 homers and 109 RBIs in 134 games between Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A last year.

Kansas City has not had a winning season since 2003.
