SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1359670259028CPSC(WASHINGTON) — Approximately 2.3 million bottles of cough and cold syrups manufactured by Novartis under the brand names Triaminic and Theraflu are being recalled because the child-resistant caps are insufficient when it comes to keeping children out of the bottles.

The products contain acetaminophen and, in some cases, diphenhydramine — both of which can be dangerous to children in the event of an overdose.

There have been 12 reports of children getting into the locked bottles; among those reports, four children actually ingested the product and one required medical attention.

The packaging of these products has been an issue of concern in the past. A 2010 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that many of these products lacked a measuring device to administer the proper dose to kids, despite FDA recommendations urging such features.
