Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) — J.J. Abrams has come through for a cancer-stricken Star Trek fan who’d hoped to see the director’s upcoming Star Trek sequel before he died.

Late last month, word spread on the social website Reddit of the plight of the 41-year-old fan, named Dan, whose wife said he had only weeks to live.  He was hoping to see Star Trek Into Darkness, which won’t be released in theaters until May.

Abrams learned about Dan’s story and called Dan’s wife, according to a post last week by a friend.  The friend noted that Abrams was going to try to arrange a screening of either the entire film or a promo reel for Dan.

An update was posted on Reddit on New Year’s Eve.  It reads: “Hi everyone, it’s Daniel’s wife, we are of course sworn to secrecy, BUT we are officially allowed to say we saw it and we enjoyed it IMMENSELY as a film and as a gesture. …Also, it was truely [sic] amazing that a film-maker so secretive as JJ Abrams was kind enough to show this to us.”
