“His doctors say he continues to respond satisfactorily to treatment and is much better now than he was when he was admitted to hospital on the 27th of March 2013,” the statement reads.

Over the weekend, the presidency said that Mandela spent a “restful” Easter in the hospital.

“Doctors advise that due to the lung infection, former President Mandela has developed a pleural effusion which was tapped,” President Jacob Zuma’s office said in a statement Saturday.  “This has resulted in him being now able to breathe without difficulty.”

Mandela, 94, spent 18 days in the hospital last December for a lung infection and gallstones.

Earlier in March, he was hospitalized overnight for scheduled medical tests, according to the presidency.
