Kanaan, of KV Racing Technology, pretty much secured his first Indy 500 victory on the 198th lap under a yellow flag when Dario Franchitti hit the wall.

Before this race, Kanaan had led 221 laps at Indy without winning. That is more than any non-winner besides Rex Mays and Michael Andretti.

Fellow Brazilian Helio Castroneves finished the race in sixth, failing to win what would have been a record-tying fourth Indy 500.

Marco Andretti, who was looking to become the second Andretti in 68 tries to win, came in fourth. Marco’s grandfather Mario won the race in 1969.

Pole-sitter Ed Carpenter finished 10th.

There was a record-tying four women in the field this year. Ana Beatriz finished in 15th, the highest of all them.

The race featured many leaders and a record 68 lead changes, doubling the previous record of 34 that was set last year.

Rookie Carolos Munoz finished second and Ryan Hunter-Reay came in third.
