(MILAN) — Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was convicted Monday by a Milan court of paying for sex with an underage prostitute and using his office to cover it up.
The 76-year-old was sentenced to seven years in prison and banned for life from holding public office.
But the powerful politician and media mogul isn’t going to jail anytime soon. With two more avenues of appeal, it could be years before he is ordered to jail.
Berlusconi no longer holds any elected office, but his People of Freedom party is central to Italy’s coalition government.
