Britain’s Prince Philip Admitted to London Hospital for Surgery

Paul Edwards – WPA Pool/Getty Images(LONDON) — Britain’s Prince Philip has been admitted to the hospital for exploratory abdominal surgery.
According to a statement issued by Buckingham Palace on Thursday, Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, was admitted to the London Clinic for an exploratory operation “following abdominal investigations.”
The release said he was expected to remain there for up to two weeks.
Philip, the duke of Edinburgh, was at a scheduled garden party Thursday afternoon before being taken to the hospital. He was driven to the hospital by car, and walked inside the facility on his own, the BBC reported, adding that he was joking with staff there.
Philip, who celebrates his 92nd birthday on Monday, has had recent health problems. On Monday he reportedly pulled out of a scheduled event because he felt unwell, the BBC reported.
Last year he was hospitalized for a recurring bladder infection, including during the queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June. He was treated for a blocked coronary artery in December.
He was hospitalized for a chest infection in 2008, but recovered quickly. Officials revealed in 2007 that he had been suffering from a heart condition since 1992.
