While Hart does not condone Deen’s use of the racial slur, he suggests that her detractors should back off a little. He tells ABC News Radio, “She just messed up and got caught and it got out the wrong way. I don’t think that she should be getting hit where she’s getting hit. Not at this magnitude.”

Hart, who’s African-American, happens to utter the N-word several times in the trailer alone for his new stand-up concert movie, Let Me Explain. But he says the circumstances are different than they were for Deen. He says, “It’s not okay for me to say any derogatory term towards the opposite race. In any way shape or form. But if that opposite race chooses to call themselves whatever they want to call themselves, that’s between them.”

Let Me Explain opens on Wednesday.
