Chicago White Sox Hire Jim Thome in the Front Office

Ron Vesely/MLB Photos via Getty Images(CHICAGO) — The Chicago White Sox hired former designated hitter Jim Thome as a special assistant to general manager Rick Hahn, the club announced on Tuesday.
The 42-year-old Thome’s duties will include assisting Hahn and assistant general manager Buddy Bell, working with the White Sox players and coaches and visiting Chicago’s minor-league affiliates for player evaluation.
“Taking on this new role with the White Sox just seemed like a natural next step for me and my family,” Thome said in a statement released by the team. “I am excited about the opportunity to make an impact on a major league organization and to work with people I know and respect, like Jerry Reinsdorf, Ken Williams, Rick, Buddy and Robin Ventura. I don’t think I could ask for a better situation than being in Chicago and with the White Sox.”
Thome spent 22 years in the big leagues as a first baseman and designated hitter for the Cleveland Indians (1991-2002, ’11), Philadelphia Phillies (2003-05 ’12), the White Sox (2006-09), Los Angeles Dodgers (2009), Minnesota Twins (2010-11) and Baltimore Orioles (2012). He batted .276 with 612 home runs, 1,699 RBIs and 1,583 runs scored in 8,422 at-bats.
