Michael THURSTON/AFP/Getty Images(BOSTON) — Massachusetts State Police photographer Sgt. Sean Murphy was placed on desk duty Tuesday for releasing without authorization the arrest photos of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, which show the surviving bomb suspect with a bloody face — a sniper’s rifle, aimed at his head.

“The debate is whether he will be punished and if so to what extent,” said defense attorney Leonard Kesten, who says any punishment should be reasonable. “He did not sell the pictures and he did not hide. That is so admirable.”

Murphy could be suspended or fired for releasing the photos.

Murphy has said he wanted to counter the more favorable image of Tsarnaev on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
