The move is retroactive to July 12 and Holliday is eligible to return July 27.

Holliday hurt the hamstring while running out a ground ball in a July 11 game versus the Chicago Cubs. He hasn’t played since.

Holliday participated in batting practice Thursday and Friday, but after not being able to run at full speed without experiencing pain, the team decided to place him on the DL.

The Cardinals called up first baseman Brock Peterson from Triple-A Memphis to take Holliday’s roster spot. Peterson was hitting .306 with a league high 22 home runs for Memphis.

Holliday is hitting .268 with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs for the season.
