(SAN DIEGO) — Comic-Con International: San Diego officially got underway on Thursday.
Despite its humble beginnings as the tiny Golden State Comic Book Convention back in 1970, San Diego Comic-Con has ballooned into a multi-day, multimillion dollar mecca for all things pop culture, and a major stop for fans and for celebrities and studios promoting upcoming projects.
A galaxy of stars will be on hand for the festivities, including the cast of The Amazing Spider-Man 2; Harrison Ford, promoting his sci-fi film Ender’s Game; Hugh Jackman, backing next week’s The Wolverine; and Bryan Cranston, plugging both the final season of Breaking Bad and next year’s Godzilla re-boot, just to name a few.
One of the first of many sneak peeks that was unveiled at the convention was a teaser of Jamie Foxx, in glowing blue makeup, as the Amazing Spider-Man sequel villain Electro.
“You wanna know how powerful I am?” he rasps ominously. “Well I wanna know, too.”
On the convention’s main floor, they’re selling everything from action figures to celebrity autographs. Just some of those who will be on hand to whip out the Sharpies — for a fee — will be X-Files stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, the casts of current hits like Dexter and The Walking Dead, and comic book legend Stan Lee.
At another convention last month, Lee, the co-creator of iconic heroes like Iron Man, X-Men, and Spider-Man, told ABC News Radio he “loves” the chance to talk to the hundreds of fans who line up to see him.
“The thing I like is that they’re all different ages: young kids, older people…I’m amazed,” he said.
All told, the convention is expected to bring more than a hundred thousand fans — and over $125 million — to the area.
