(OAKLAND) — Oakland Athletics All-Star pitcher Bartolo Colon will be placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, with a groin strain.
Colon noticed the injury during his throwing session Friday. When he still felt pain in the groin area Saturday, it was decided to give him a rest.
Tommy Milone will be called up from Triple-A Sacramento to make Colon’s start versus the Indians Sunday.
“Yesterday was the first time he felt it,” Athletics skipper Bob Melvin said. “He came in today and it was sore again. Probably the prudent thing to do is not push him too much here and give him these 15 days off and see where we go from there. But to be able to have a guy like Tommy Milone to call on and pitch tomorrow is quite the luxury.”
The 40-year-old Colon is 14-5 with a 2.97 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP this season.
