(MADISON, Wis.) — The 23d-ranked Wisconsin Badgers can only hope the rest of their season goes like their season-opener did as they put defeated Massachusetts 45-0.
New Badgers head coach Gary Andersen had to be happy with what he saw from his team on Saturday.
While sophomore quarterback Joel Stave completed just 9 of 17 passes for 197 yards with two touchdowns, its was the running game that carried them.
Melvin Gordon ran for 144 yards and a touchdown on just 13 carries, while James White ran for 143 yards on 11 caries while also scoring a touchdown.
“Today was the first game,” Andersen said. “It was sort of special to me and will be forever.”
It was a rough day for Massachusetts all around. Quarterback Mike Wegzyn complete just 9 of 23 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Meanwhile, running back Stacey Bedell had 70 yards rushing on 19 carries.
Andersen is taking over for Bret Bielema. He coached the team from 2006-2012, but left to become the head coach at Arkansas.
