(NEW ORLEANS) — Former LSU head football coach Paul Dietzel, who led the Tigers to their first national championship in 1958, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89.
Dietzel roamed the sidelines for LSU from 1955 until 1961, where he compiled a record of 46-24-3, including 20-16-2 in the SEC. He later went on to coach Army and South Carolina, before returning to LSU as athletics director in 1978.
During LSU’s national championship season, Dietzel guided the Tigers to a perfect 11-0 record and a 7-0 victory over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl. He was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 and the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
