The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the birth rate for teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 fell to 29.4 births per 1,000 girls in 2012 — the lowest number in recorded history. The year before, the rate was 31.3 births per 1,000 teens.

The latest figure is also less than half of the all-time high — 61.8 births per 1,000 girls — reached in 1991.  And the numbers are down for all racial and ethnic groups.

Experts say the decrease has something to do with teens having less sex and using more contraception.
