(NEW YORK) — Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson’s two-year-old son died Friday in South Dakota after suffering injuries due to an alleged assault, according to Sioux Falls police.
Peterson’s father, Nelson Peterson, confirmed to the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the boy is Peterson’s son.
Joseph Patterson, 27, was arrested on aggravated assault charges Thursday. According to police, Patterson is the boyfriend of the child’s mother.
The boy was found unresponsive and taken to the hospital Wednesday when police and an EMS crew were called to a Sioux Falls home, according to a police statement. The boy was under the care of Patterson and nobody else was home.
At the hospital it was determined that the child’s injuries were consistent with abuse.
Peterson left the Vikings team facility Friday evening.
“Thank you to my family, my fans and fans of other teams for their support. The NFL is a fraternity of brothers and I am thankful for the tweets, phone calls and text messages from my fellow players. God Bless everyone and thank u so much,” Peterson tweeted.
