Thousands of people in the central Philippines evacuated their homes and businesses Thursday ahead of Typhoon Haiyan. The storm is expected to make landfall on Friday.

“No typhoon can bring Filipinos to their knees if we’ll be united,” President Benigno Aquino said, according to the BBC.

The typhoon comes just a month after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake shook the region.
