(LAKE BUNEA VISTA, Fla.) — The Texas Rangers signed free agent catcher J.P. Arencibia to a one-year contract, the club announced on Tuesday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 27-year-old Arencibia previously spent his entire four-year career with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he batted .212 with 64 home runs and 193 RBIs in 1,299 at-bats. Last season, he hit .194 with 21 homers and 55 RBIs.
Over the past three seasons, Arencibia has belted 62 home runs, which is the fourth-highest total among any major league catcher. Only Baltimore’s Matt Wieters (67), Cleveland’s Carlos Santana (65) and Brian McCann (64) of the Yankees have hit more.
