(MONTPELIER, ID) – An avalanche warning is in effect for portions of southeast Idaho. On Thursday, the National Weather Service indicated that avalanche danger was significant in higher elevations around Preston, Montpelier, and Bear Lake. Only a few weeks ago, a local man was nearly killed when he was caught in a slide while snowmobiling in the Green Canyon area east of St. Charles. Authorities are advising those visiting the backcountry to avoid traveling on or near steep slopes and other historical avalanche paths.
