(NEW YORK) — San Francisco 49ers’ Pro Bowl linebacker NaVorro Bowman suffered a torn ACL and MCL in Sunday’s NFC championship game loss to the Seattle Seahawks, according to ESPN and media reports.
The injury occurred when Seahawks receiver Jermaine Kearse fell on his leg while Bowman was stopping him from getting into the end zone. The ball was knocked loose and fell into Bowman’s outstretched arms but Seattle retained possession.
The 25-year-old Bowman had to be carted off the field and did not return. He was one of the best defensive players in the NFL this season with 120 tackles, four forced fumbles, and two interceptions. In three postseason games he added 21 tackles and two sacks.
Bowman will undergo surgery to repair the torn ACL while giving the MCL some time to heal. He is expected to be ready for the start of the 2014 season.
