Health officials have long wished for the end of cigarette smoking, but have shied away from predicting when smoking rates will fall to zero, until now.

According to ABC’s Daniela Bilotta, thanks to policies that have proven to drive down tobacco use, like increased cigarette taxes and laws banning smoking in public places, officials are starting to throw around phrases like “end game” and “tobacco-free generation.”

Some health officials have predicted the adult smoking rate could drop to 10% in the next decade, and to 5% or lower by 2050, Bilotta reports.
