The Americans outshot Sweden 70-9 to guarantee themselves no worse than a silver medal.  The U.S. has medaled every time since women’s hockey was added to the Winter Olympics in 1998.  A loss to Sweden in the 2006 semifinals was the only time it failed to reach the championship game.

“When that buzzer goes off and it erupted in the arena and we fell short of our goal of being the best in the world, that hurts,” four-time Olympian Julie Chu said, referring to the team’s loss to Canada in the 2010 gold medal game.  “The last four years, that’s been our goal.”

Jesse Vetter made just eight saves in goal for the victory.

They advance to take on Canada, which has played in every Olympic final.  The Canadians are vying for their fourth gold in a row on Thursday.
