“As the world becomes more complex and governments everywhere struggle, trust in the internet is more important today than ever,” he said in a statement on Facebook. “…We work together to create this secure environment and make our shared space even better for the world. This is why I’ve been so confused and frustrated by the repeated reports of the behavior of the US government.”

Zuckerberg, who has been openly critical about high-profile issues such as immigration reform and has previously met with President Barack Obama, conveyed his dissatisfaction with the government’s surveillance.

He goes on to say that the government serves as a threat to the Internet, and that he has called the president to express his discontent. Still, he explains, “It seems like it will take a very long time for true full reform.”

Representatives from other tech giants like Apple, Twitter and Netflix have met with Obama and his team to discuss national security and NSA surveillance. The industry executives shared concerns over the negative impact of spying efforts and retrieval of customer data.

Zuckerberg’s statement comes on the heels of stories linking companies like Facebook to NSA documents citing user information retrieved from servers. Facebook denies giving the agency direct access.
