Australian PM Expresses Confidence Pings Coming from Flight 370

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1397205468177David Hardenberg/Getty Images(PERTH, Australia) — On the 34th day since Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished with 239 people on board, Australia Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Friday that authorities are confident searchers have picked up sounds from the missing plane’s black boxes.

Due to this optimism, Abbot said the search for what may be the wreckage of Flight 370 has been narrowed to a small area of the southern Indian Ocean.

However, Abbott admitted that time is of the essence since the Boeing 777’s locator beacons have a battery life of about a month.

Meanwhile, what was deemed a “possible signal” detected on Thursday turned out to be a false alarm, according to an analysis released Friday by the Australian Joint Acoustic Analysis Center.

That means there have been just four signals consistent with the pings of a plane’s black box detected since Saturday.
