(ANN ARBOR, Mich.) — Michigan sophomore Mitch McGary will forego his final two years in college after testing positive for marijuana.
The power forward will enter the upcoming NBA draft, under the specter of an NCAA suspension that Yahoo Sports reported would last a full year.
“I made a terrible decision that I do regret,” McGary said to MGoBlue, the university’s sports website. “I tested positive for marijuana during the drug test during the Sweet 16. I do regret this decision. It’s hurtful for me. I want to put it behind me and move past it.”
The Wolverines advanced to the Elite Eight earlier this year before losing to Kentucky.
After an impressive freshman season, McGary was sidelined this past year with injuries, and many thought he would stay another year to rebuild his resume. Now, it appears he has no choice but to take his chances as a pro.
