According to Egyptian state television, a police brigadier general was killed and others were wounded. The general was in charge of investigations for the western Giza area. So far, it’s unclear whether he was targeted.

The attack in Cairo is the latest in a growing number of insurgent attacks since the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi last summer.

There has been no claim of responsibility for Wednesday’s bombings. Previous attacks have been carried out by Islamist insurgent groups opposed to the military coup that ousted Morsi and saw the generals take charge.

The military-backed interim government has ferociously cracked down on dissent, arresting hundreds of supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood. Last week, an Egyptian court sentenced 529 Muslim brotherhood members to death.

The de facto ruler of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el Sisi, was the Egyptian defense minister who ousted Morsi. He has since stepped down and declared his candidacy for Egypt’s presidential elections, which he is all but guaranteed to win.
