GETTY 040814 WallStreet? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1396993670192iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — The markets on Tuesday began to stabilize after a three-day slump.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 10 points at 16,256.14. The Nasdaq Composite rose 33 points to 4,112.99. The S&P 500 index gained 7 points, ending the session at 1,851.96.

Investors picked up stocks that had been beaten down recently, including large tech companies like Facebook and Google, which were both up for the session.

Investors begin to focus again on corporate earnings this week.  Alcoa reported just after the close that its first-quarter numbers were short of expectations.

Chevron, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo report their quarterly figures later this week.

American Airlines and US Airways are changing their policies for checked-bag fees and redeeming miles for free flights.  If you’re using miles to fly American, or you bought an economy seat, you won’t get to check two bags for free anymore.  On the upside, US Airways is ending blackout days for redeeming miles for free flights.
