“I have been undergoing treatment for several years for a medical condition, Attention Deficit Disorder, for which I previously had a Therapeutic Use Exemption,” Maybin said in a statement. “Unfortunately, in my attempts to switch back to a medicine that had been previously OK’d, I neglected to follow all the rules and as a result I tested positive.”

Maybin was once considered one of the best young prospects in baseball not too long ago, but never fully reached his potential. In 62 games this season, the 27-year-old Maybin is hitting .247 with one home run and drove in nine runs.

The Padres signed Maybin to a five-year, $25 million contract extension in March 2012, but he’s had trouble staying on the field in terms of durability and production.

The team has added outfielder Jeff Francoeur from their Triple-A El Paso club to replace Maybin.
