His performance was capped off by three straight birdies down the stretch, finishing with a 20-foot putt on 17 that allowed him to bogey the 18th and still win by two strokes over Cameron Tringale.

“This game is all about winning,” Mahan said. “You can have a great year and if you don’t win, it just feels like you missed out on something. So to get a win, and do it in a tournament like this in this kind of fashion with a 65 on Sunday, feels great.”

The 32-year-old took over the lead for good after sinking a 10-foot birdie putt on 15, and then expanded the lead with birdies on each of the next two holes. Despite driving his final tee shot into the trees, Mahan was able to pitch back on to the fairway and eventually knock in an 8-foot bogey putt.

Mahan has never missed a FedEx Cup playoff event and has now put himself in contention for a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team. This victory catapults Mahan to the top of the FedEx Cup points standings after the first tournament of the PGA’s playoff system. The top 100 players in the standings advance to the Duetsche Bank Championship next week in Boston.

World number one, Rory McIlroy, who had won his last three tournaments, shot a final round 70 and tied for 22nd.
