Report: Greg Monroe Will Sign Qualifying Offer with Pistons

Ronald Martinez/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Greg Monroe is taking a gamble on himself. Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today reports the Detroit Pistons big man will sign his qualifying offer with the team and become a free agent next season.
Monroe and the Pistons were unable to come to an agreement on a new deal, so he will sign a $5.5 million qualifying offer for the 2014-2015 season.
Now a restricted free agent, Monroe will become an unrestricted free agent following this season.
The two sides have until October 1 to agree on a deal, or the two sides could work on a sign-and-trade during that time frame.
During his four-year NBA career, Monroe, 24, is one of the up-and-coming big men in the league today. This past season, he averaged 15.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
There is a bit of a logjam in the Piston’s front court though. Along with Monroe, the Pistons also have center Andre Drummond and forward Josh Smith.
